I don’t think we should ever take for granted the ability to travel – it is a privilege after all. I also think you don’t have to be rich to have enriching travels. Here are some tips to help boost your travel savings, and get you off on that much-deserved holiday!
Travel savings tips
1. Savings targets
Pick realistic travel-saving targets that are within your budget. There is no point going into debt if this can be avoided. Tailor your travel destination to your budget, not the other way round. Whether your budget is £30 or £300… or £3000 for that matter, pick a realistic savings target and build your holiday around it.
2. Bag a bargain
Look out for deals where you can maximise your budget. It pays to shop around and either book well in advance, or go during off-season. Or you can nab a last minute deal if you aren’t fussed about the specifics. Here are some of my money saving tips for hotels.
3. Every little helps
Get yourself a change jar and save your pennies (or cents)! I know this sounds silly, but all that small change really does build up and make a difference.
4. Separate bank account
Saving money is really difficult if you can see and access the money easily. So I recommend a separate savings account or ISA (individual savings account), preferably with a high interest rate and bonuses for not touching your money. We use the Moneybox app ISA (a UK app) which allows round-ups to be taken from your bank on purchases + monthly or voluntary amounts.
5. Look ahead
I cannot reiterate this point enough. If you have bigger travel goals, it’s really important to have a proper budget and understand where your money is and how you can achieve your goals. I’m a fan of spreadsheets, but if you’re not the excel kinda person, don’t worry – paper and pen works fine too!
6. Work while you travel
Consider working while travelling. There are many ways to work while travelling – from fruit-picking in Australia, to teaching English in Asia, or Camp America summers. If your lifestyle allows this, why not take the leap?
6 tips to boost your travel savings
Whether you boost your travel savings by collecting pennies, or by investing and spreadsheeting, it’s good to have a goal. My favourite way to motivate my saving is to research the places I want to go – read blogs, make road trip maps, and revel in the planning stage! Whatever your motivation, if you want to travel, you’ve got to boost your travel savings! Good luck!
