We are lucky across Europe to have some great ways to get around, so I thought I would rank my favourite modes of transport and explain the perks of each!
Walking
I’m a huge fan of walking around cities – I think it allows you to see areas you usually don’t see by bus / taxi / metro. There are hidden gems around every corner, and there is a joy to getting off the beaten track, or even getting a little lost, and discovering parts of a city that aren’t in the guide-book.
Places I’ve discovered by wandering include: This amazing ship-like building in Berlin (Corneliusstraße); and the lovely wonky medieval buildings on Place du Vieux Marché in Rouen, amongst many many others!

Trains
There is something romantic about train travel – the slow click-clacking of the train on the tracks, and the endless montage as the countryside flies by the window. Europe has an amazing train network and it is a very convivial way to travel (especially if you are a writer like me, hours of undisturbed writing time = bliss).

Road Trips
I’ve got to admit, I do love a road trip! And while it does rather get in the way of my liking of wine, a road trip can be a great way to explore the areas not serviced by public transport.
On a recent jaunt around the Charente in France, we took the back roads and we saw our very first hare (A HARE, OMG!), as well as finding several grand houses and castles. A road trip for me isn’t about the destination, but about the winding journey!
Road-tripping also allows us to bring our dog with us!

I’d love to hear what your favourite modes of transport are – bicycle, tuk-tuk, bus, tram, funicular? Comment below and join the discussion!
